Filthier, faster and louder at the Speedfest
Fast cars, coloured tattoos, wild hair and loud music. The Klokbuilding on Strijp-S, Eindhoven was the domain of more then 3000 speedrockers (note: it was over 4000). A mix of punks, skinheads, bikers and rockers made the 3rd speedfest memorable.
Organisors were the guys from Peter Pan Speedrock, a threesome that’s been the frontline of the Eindhoven rockscene for years now. With their pulsating speedrock the band built a large fanbase in Holland as well as abroad. And again they didn’t let their fans down this time.
In 3 big halls the audience was presented with the best the underground punkscene has to offer now. Like the Real McKenzies, a Canadian rockgroup that combines punk with folkmusic, including kilts and bagpipes. Or the New York Casualties that are in good punk tradition explicit with their rage against the world.
Nice was the show of the Def Americans, a Dutch band that plays Johnny Cash covers, maybe strange at first but the rockabilly songs by Cash make you believe that there was a punkrocker hidden in the man in black.
Another highlight was the show of Batmobile. The Dutch veterans, the band is around for 25 years, play an appealing kind of rock ‘n roll at killerspeed. Batmobile playing the Speedfest wasn’t a surprise, since the band just released an album together with Peter Pan Speedrock. Peter Pan played a game on their own turf and did what was to be expected, blow off the top of the roof.
The last act was guitar-virtuoso Zakk Wylde with his Black Label Society. Wylde played with Ozzy Osbourne for years and plays with his own band heavy metal with a lot of screaming guitarsolos.
A wild party it was, the Speedfest. But one that confirms the status of Eindhoven Rockcity. At the Speedfest it’s always Filthier, faster and louder and we can’t wait for the next edition. |
